51 Ultimate Short Haircuts to Boost Volume to Fine Hair

Recently, I caught a client in her mid-40s staring at me while I was cutting her hair, and she said, “I just want it to look like there’s more of it.” I hear this type of comment the most. Fine hair has its own unique challenges. It’s not necessarily that the hair is damaged or even that is the case where the hair is thin. The issue is that the individual strands are smaller. This alters each and every aspect of how the cut is going to fall, how it’s going to move, and how it will catch the light. It’s not a simple case of going shorter; although that usually helps. The key is to have a strong sense of how to manage the balance of the weight; where to take some away, and where to do nothing at all.

I recall a client from years ago who had been growing her hair out for three years because someone told her that there would be more hair if she got layers. She came with a long, straight hair that looked like a sad, flat curtain. After getting it cut to chin length, she cried. It was not a dramatic change, and she was not crying because of the emotional impact, but rather because the hair finally moved in a way she had always wanted. This is what a good short cut actually does for fine hair – It stops fighting against the hair and starts working with the hair. I will be sharing quite a few cuts that I believe are worth considering. I will be completely honest about the cuts that I love and the ones that come with some caveats.

Photos

#1: A Clean Little Bob with Just a Whisper of Highlights

I can do these haircuts over and over again. They are quick and easy, and work really well with fine hair. The solid bottom line makes it look like there’s more hair, and those highlights just add more dimension instead of stealing the show. You won’t need much product to style this cut, maybe a little smoothing serum and you’re good to go. It’s the type of haircut that you just look put together without that much effort.

Textured Bob with Playful Bangs

#2: A Tousled Bob with Bangs That Actually Work

I really like it when people get bangs. They look good because they make the hair look fuller, they also make the forehead look less big. They look super cute and the whole ‘I woke up like this’ look really gives the impression that the hair is much more voluminous to the really fine strands. The bangs and layers around the face make the hair look super nice and really gives the extra texture and volume. It is true that the layers appear more subtle, but they also help to keep the hair from looking too flat. I do believe that bangs are less of a commitment. It can be a bit annoying when the bangs are out grown so you do have to keep up with trims. I do really like the look of bangs, especially on girls with oval or heart shaped faces.

Chic Layered Bob with Subtle Texture
Instagram: buggaboosbeauty

#3: A Layered Bob That Gives You Some Movement

If you are going for a haircut that has a little bit more movement to it but you aren’t looking to go shorter, then this is a good option. The movement brought from the layers here works well to contrast the choppy and fine hair that can cause the hair to look too wispy. If you have a round face, the soft wave is very flattering and provides more structure to the overall look. These layers are going to need maintenance around every six to eight weeks in order to maintain the look, if not, they are just going to lose their purpose and blend into one.

Textured Tawny Tousle with Soft Side-Swept Bangs
Instagram: motoksmmm

#4: That Warm Tousled Look with Side-Swept Bangs

I think this one is amazing! The warm color looks great, and is very natural. The texture adds a lot of volume, especially at the crown. Because fine hair sits flat and gives up, the side-swept bangs allow some face framing, but also direct attention to your eyes which is always a compliment. The layering is great, adding body without looking sparse, and that takes some skill. The only thing I would say is that a tousled look needs a lot of help to stay looking tousled. If you live in a humid area, I recommend adding some mousse when the hair is damp.

Sleek Silver Layers with Soft Gradation
Instagram: zoomhairstudio

#5: Silver Layers with That Pretty Root-to-Tip Gradation

There is no other way to put it: this looks amazing! The contrast between the darker roots and the rest of the hair being silver makes it look thicker, and the hair more full of depth. The layers look great and create some movement, and the silver is just so soft! I have to be honest with you though, silver hair is a big pain to keep up with! It requires you to make regular toning appointments, and you will also need to buy some good purple shampoo. If your hair is fine, the lightening will also damage your hair over time. If you are prepared to keep up with this look, you will look amazing!

Chic Wispy Chocolate Layered Bob
Instagram: zak2_nanuk

#6: A Wispy Chocolate Bob That I Just Really Like

I don’t know what it is about this hairstyle that I keep coming back to it, maybe it is the ‘done but not done’ vibe that it has. Plus, the blunt layers give a certain something to the overall style. The layers that are more wispy give the hair a nice movement, which is great because it adds a lot of volume too. The warm dark color is beautiful. The length is great too, falling just above the shoulders is ideal, and the movement around the face is lovely and very feminine which is great for oval face shapes. You will be wanting to come into the salon for a trim around every 6 weeks because these layers need to be kept in check. Also, the style will look so much better once you get some texture added back in, but this style is as easy as it gets.

Stylish Multi-Toned Angled Bob with Hidden Highlights
Instagram: tkunsthair

#7: An Angled Bob with Some Hidden Color Magic

With this one I know it’s very technical and not everyone will pick up on it. The back and front angle complement the natural contours of the face, reinforcing the intention of the cut. Then the highlights. I don’t mean to be rude but what’s most important is that there are deeper highlights mixed in so the hair has depth and so the fine strands don’t look streaky or overdone. This is something I see a ton when people go way too heavy with color and create a mess with fine textured hair. This style works nicely on straight hair or slightly wavy hair. I would say that with how precise the angle is, and with the color placement, you’re gonna have to come back and get maintenance done, so keep that in mind when you’re planning this cut.

Polished Jet-Black Chin-Length Bob
Instagram: takasekanae

#8: A Jet-Black Chin-Length Bob, Very Classic

I can see your perspective of this awesome clean cut, but won’t say it is the most exciting with the black color. The cut is precise and on point to what it was intended for and yes the fine hair makes the look a little more sleek and deliberate rather than flat. The cut does look elegant with that jet black color and is chin length which is great for fine hair, as it is long enough to give the impression that there is a lot of hair, but short enough to hold a style. In terms of upkeep, regular trims will be needed to keep the edges crisp, as well as touch ups for the black color which does fade, but for the most part, the look is clean and sophisticated.

Effortless Soft Layers with Natural Sweeping Fringe
Instagram: sharpstudioshair

#9: Soft Layers with a Fringe That Just Falls Naturally

I can see how much work created this style. It looks like it took no effort at all, which is a real accomplishment with fine hair. The layers in this style add volume without going too far. The sweeping fringe is pretty and natural. I think this is one of those haircuts that looks good at the office and also good at the grocery store. Fine hair typically lies pretty flat, so the layers can hold their shape longer if some volumizing spray is added to the routine.

Elegant Brunette Bob with Curved Bangs
Instagram: ruriko_ishikawa

#10: A Brunette Bob with Those Curved Bangs

This style features soft rounded bangs that soften the look and highlight the cheekbones. The rest of the cut is clean and simple, falling just above the shoulders, with plenty of weight at the ends to keep finer hair from looking too thin. The simplicity is the focus with no distractions, just good cut hair. It’s great for any face shape. Don’t think it’s just for round or heart shapes. Bangs trim every couple weeks, so it’s low maintenance, but be careful, they grow really quickly and can end up sitting on your eyelids.

Polished Ebony Rounded Bob with Side Part
Instagram: rhandy_art

#11: A Glossy Dark Rounded Bob with a Deep Side Part

WOW! The gloss is just incredible on this one! When a bob is in a deep, dark color, it’s super shiny and creates the illusion that even the finest hair is much thicker than it really is! Plus the rounded shape is keeping the volume. It’s not hanging straight down, it’s slightly curving inward which gives the whole style more body. The deep side part also adds a little drama and distributes the hair for a fuller looking side which is a nice trick. You will need to maintain that clean line around the neck and ears though, once that starts to grow out it really loses the polished effect super fast.

Curly Voluminous Pixie with Natural Taper
Instagram: nothingbutpixies

#12: A Curly Pixie That’s Got Real Bounce

Every person with a natural wave or curl should try this hairstyle. It gives life to finer hair and adds some volume. The closer-cropped sides of the hairstyle keep everything neat, and the curls on top are always super full and allow for a youthful, bouncy, and fun look. I also enjoy that, even with a lot of texture, there is a natural taper at the nape that keeps the cut from looking too bulky. Haircuts that look good without a lot of effort are always a treat, and I appreciate this cut because while it does look good, there is a possibility of it losing that good look faster than expected once things start to grow out, especially because of the shape. This haircut is good for the person that is a bit more patient than most when it comes to spending time on a longer cut.

Dynamic Contrast Bob with Light Layers
Instagram: motoksmmm

#13: A Contrast Bob with Light Layers and Dimension

This hair style features a lot going on, and we mean that in a good way. The move from darker roots to lighter ends is always going to add interest to finer hair and give the appearance of more hair overall. The lighter layers at the front are soft and pretty, keeping the whole style modern and fresh with a good chance of avoiding any overly trendy vibes. There’s very little effort involved on a daily basis – probably a texturising spray and five minutes with a blowdry should do the job. The biggest commitment is to the colour – fading the roots requires a bit of work and so does maintaining the gradient – but overall the cut is pretty easy.

Subtle Pink Shag for Thin Hair
Instagram: motoksmmm

#14: A Pink Shag, and I Mean That in the Best Way

The shag haircut is awesome for fine hair since the layers create volume, texture, and movement in the hair. The soft pink adds a nice fresh element to the overall look. It is fun and stylish without being over the top. The hair being slightly messy actually works in her favour and is also intentional. So having fine hair is an advantage. The look is not sleek, so the hair won’t work against it to achieve a look it can never reach. On the other hand, I can’t say this about the pink shade. It will probably fade faster than you expect. I hope you are ready to put in the work to keep a nice pinkish color because it will wash out to a dull salmon. Just use some color safe products and it will look fresh!

Sleek Textured Bob with Subtle Highlights

#15: A Textured Bob with Highlights and That Effortless Thing

I appreciate the apparent ease, as well as the attention to detail that went into this. The highlights do an amazing job in creating the illusion of added depth and thickness. The fine hairs do get that airy feel, which is really needed to achieve the desired look, and the texture is great. The length is perfect at just above the shoulders and that is the sweet spot for lots of bounce. The hair is cut just above the shoulders and it gives all that bounce without too much weight pulling everything down. I love the small pieces falling around the face, it feels casual and lived in, and makes it seem so much more real than just a salon shot. If you prefer to pull your hair back this style isn’t ideal, the hair is just a bit too short for a ponytail.

Rich Caramel Swirls on Brunette Lob
Instagram: linqkappers

#16: A Brunette Lob with Caramel Running Through It

Your hair color is stunning. The warm caramel tones are beautifully woven throughout the brunette base making the color look dimensional. For fine hair, warm multi-tonal colors create the ilusion of added volume. Your ends are again smartly feathered which helps to avoid that blunt, heavy line at the bottom. Lines like that can really pull fine hair down and make it look lifeless. A lob is a little longer than a lot of the styles here, which means a little more styling time in the morning, but the added versatility is nice. You have so many options! You can wear it straight, wavy, or even push it back behind your ears.

#17: A Tapered Brunette Pixie That Means Business

Pixie cuts can have polarizing opinions. Some adore them, while others even fear the style. However, on fine textured hair, it can work wonders as it plays to the hair’s natural texture. The tapered sides and tousled top give the illusion of much more hair. The natural brunette shade is easy, yet grounded. I would especially recommend this to rounder faces as the style cuts the length of the face down visually. You will need to commit to frequent trims. Every four to five weeks, to be specific, as a pixie cut can look unintentional when it starts to grow out.

Chic Angled Bob with Textured Fringe
Instagram: hana.f__

#18: An Angled Bob with a Fringe That Softens Everything

I do a lot of angled bobs and I understand why they work for fine hair. The angle gives the front more fullness. I especially like the fringe here as it is soft and broken which interrupts the whole look and stops it from being too harsh/edgy. The tousled finish is nice and relaxed and stops it from being too neat and fussy. My only concern is the angle will need regular trimming or it will lose its line and just end up looking like a growing out bob instead of an angled cut, so keep on top of that.

Softly Tapered Chestnut Bob with Subtle Face-Framing
Instagram: hairlovejp

#19: A Chestnut Bob with Tapered Layers Framing the Face

The chestnut color is warm and has a natural quality to it. I think for fine hair this is helpful because extreme color differences (either light or dark) tend to make fine hair look even thinner. However, a color such as this range adds warmth and richness which helps the hair appear fuller. The face-framing layers are tapered to create movement towards the jaw, which is also flattering and gives the appearance of more density where it is visible. I also appreciate that this is a professional look that isn’t super high maintenance. Personally, I like to get a trim every six weeks or so to keep it looking fresh.

#20: A Textured Pixie with a Tapered Nape

This stylist masterpiece on the pixie cut shows how much thought, intent, and experience these stylists have. The tapered nape, dirty textured bangs, and overall cut shape create a fantastic illusion to the volume and thickness of the hair, Whether that is real or not. A cut like this is best suited for someone who leads an active lifestyle, only wants to put in minimal effort every morning, yet still looks like the have everything put together. The only real trade off is the amount of maintenance. It will only be a matter of a few weeks, about 3-4 before the cut starts losing shape. So this means frequent trims will be necessary.

Effortless Brunette Pixie with Textured Waves
Instagram: cyoshi___

#21: A Brunette Pixie with Some Wave to It

If your hair has some natural waves or texture, this is a great hairstyle to have because the cut is designed to let the hair do its thing rather than flattening it down. The shorter layers in the back and longer pieces on top create versatility so you can either tousle it for volume, or smooth it down for a sleeker look depending on what you’re feeling. The bangs frame the face and are light enough which is required when dealing with finer hair because heavy bangs tend to go limp. You’ll need some texture paste or something to define the cut, and you’ll need regular trims to keep the shape, but overall it is a good simple hairstyle that fine hair adds a lot to.

Edgy Tousled Asymmetrical Bob
Instagram: cutsbycaroline

#22: A Tousled Asymmetrical Bob with Some Edge

What do you think about this hair? I love it! The attitude is really what I love most about it. The subtle asymmetry works well with shorter back layers that graduate to longer pieces in the front. The mystery hair is awesome as well with chopped ends that suggest fine strands. Almost deliberate messiness, as this is, works really well. The deep side part does a lot to pull the whole style together, adding weight to the side with more hair. I personally think this is best suited to oval and heart-shaped faces, but I have seen it work for a lot of people. Just know that the shorter back does mean you have to get more frequent cuts to maintain the shape.

#23: A Brunette Layered Bob with Easy Soft Waves

This is nice and reliable! This cut is shoulder length and has long layers. It will give fine hair more movement and life. It won’t over layer which can make hair look strung out. Soft waves can be done with a large barrel curling iron (or you can even braid it while it’s damp and let it sit overnight) and that still adds fine hair volume. A rounder face will find this cut especially nice because it will lengthen an already round face. This cut will need layer maintenance every couple months, but the cut looks pretty and is effortless to style on a day to day basis.

Classic Midnight-Blue Feathered Bob
Instagram: cherryglazedhair

#24: A Midnight-Blue Feathered Bob

I do like that color! However, it is quite a commitment. Midnight blue will give your fine hair an added richness, fullness, and depth. The feathered layers will also enhance fullness and movement. It’s short enough to manage easily, but long enough to remain versatile and interesting. The color and cut combination is edgy. The only downside to blue-toned colors is they fade easily. If you want to maintain this look, frequent trips to the salon for toning and touch-ups will be necessary. If you like the look and the maintenance, this is perfect for you! If you prefer a more set it and forget it look, go for a more natural color.

Copper-Glazed Precision Bob with Textured Tips
Instagram: arianarosebeauty

#25: A Copper Bob with Textured Ends

Textured ends really help avoid blunt lines that can make fine hair fall flat, and mid neck cuts are really flattering for longer or oval faces. Warm copper shades really brighten your entire complexion, and on fine hair the warmth of the copper makes the hair look fuller by adding visual weight. The cut itself is low maintenance, but the color will require some maintenance to keep it this bright and avoid muddy looking color.

Textured Shoulder-Length Beachy Waves
Instagram: hairbylivrandall

#26: Beachy Shoulder-Length Waves

I think this is one of the most common styles requested and it is easy to see why. It gives the impression that you have just come back from the beach with your naturally gorgeous hair. There is definitely more volume and movement to the hair with those waves and, adding to that, the darker roots to the lighter blonde strands give the hair more dimension which makes it appear thicker. That being said, this style may look low maintenance and effortless, but it is the complete opposite. It takes quite a bit of effort to keep the waves from deflating as the day goes on so good sea salt spray really does wonders.

#27: A Soft Lob with Gentle Waves

A positive and simple haircut is always a great strength. This haircut shows off the finest of fine hair, with just the right amount of body in the waves, and since the length is just above the shoulder, the hair will not be weighed down. The end result will always be clean and will provide an authentic look. The cut will have people saying how great your hair looks, and that’s the aim. When it comes to products you’ll want something that will provide just the right amount of texture, while avoiding products that will just weigh the fine hair down.

#28: A Short Pixie with Highlights That Add Some Life

Those baby hairs create a sense of movement and volume, as well as giving the appearance of more activity at the crown of the head. Soft touches of highlight will add to the dimension of this style beautifully. The best part about these highlights is that they will be quite subtle and will be a great low maintenance option. Most face shapes will be flattered by this style and it will be easy to keep looking fresh, although you will need to get a few regular trims to keep the ends from becoming too grown out and looking stringy.

#29: A Wispy Bob That Hits Right at the Jaw

I absolutely adore jaw-length bob haircuts, especially on fine hair. With this length there is enough movement and flow to the hair but not so much length that gravity takes over and just pulls all the hair down. In this case, I love the almost wispy, feathery look she has which prevents the style from looking too heavy or blocky. The highlights also do a great job of creating life in the hair and fullness and dimension. The style looks great and can even give the impression that you are happy, even if you are having a bad day. Although, you are right that it can come with a little bit of upkeep and styling. With fine hair lacking in volume, it can tend to go very flat, which is why the look does require some effort.

Feathery Short Cut with Textured Layers
Instagram: hairstorystudio

#30: A Feathery Short Cut with Nice Movement

It feels so light! I love the length and how texturized the cut is. The feathered layers create a beautiful soft movement that gives life to fine hair instead of having it just sit there. The bangs are just wispy enough to add some extra youth and softness to the style which is lovely. This will suit straight to slightly wavy hair best as it will really show off the cut’s design in your hair. If you are wanting some depth in your color, a root smudge would be super pretty here to add some visual interest near the scalp where fine hair tends to look the thinnest.

Choppy Textured Bob with Subtle Highlights

#31 A Choppy Textured Bob That Looks Fuller Than It Is

The thinness in your hair helps balance the chop length layers giving an airy presence while the highlights brighten your hair while keeping it from looking too basic. The front pieces that are longer are nice and add help with dimension while also framing the face nicely. The look is pretty casual and lived in and as if you just got the wind blown look from running your fingers through it which is the real goal for fine hair. In order to keep that tousled look throughout the day you may want to use a light dry texture spray.

#32: A Short Pixie with Bolder Highlights

Evidently, there is a clear difference between the more delicate pixie and the more extreme approach. Here, the highlights are bolder and there is a greater focus on the height at the crown, which is excellent for fine hair that is more prone to lying flat on top. The choppy layers create lift and the overall shape is youthful and energetic. It’s a cut that requires maintenance because it can quickly lose its purpose once it starts growing out, but when it is freshly cut, it looks amazing, and actually gives fine hair more volume than it actually has.

Modern Textured A-Line Bob with Subtle Highlights

#33: An A-Line Bob That’s Just Really Well Done

A-line cuts are a classic, cut, and, style, that, are, typically, uninteresting, and, boring. However, in, the, volumizing, and, texturizing your ends, it distracts from the cut and, stiff, design, explains, the, natural, and, relaxed, look. The, added, versatility, is full with the shoulder, length cut. maintain, your, cut, and, remember, it, is, a, high, maintenance, cut, meaning, your, A-line, shape, and, is, regular, trimming, appointments, is, a, must!

#34: A Wavy Lob with Soft Highlights

The waves in this style add a lot more volume, which is what we aim for with fine hair. Hair around the shoulder is a nice length since the waves can bounce freely without it feeling heavy. Highlights also give the hair more thickness and dimension, which is nice. This hair-do is decent for anything from errands to a dinner out, and it’s nice to not feel like you have to do anything extra to it. The only thing I would say is that with finer hair, the waves need a lot more help to stay in the shape you want, so get ready to spend a lot of time styling in the morning and I suggest a flexible hold hairspray.

Textured Wavy Bob with Soft Highlights
Instagram: lileean_j

#35: A Wavy Bob with Highlights That Add Some Warmth

Here is another look which is quite easy to do. It is a shoulder length wavy bob with subtle highlights. The addition of waves adds volume to fine hair, while the highlights adds dimension to the hairstyle, preventing it from looking flat. This hairstyle looks good based on the natural texture of your hair. If your hair is very straight, you will need to do them every single day to get the waves. If you have a wave or two, it will definitely be easier. Using a lightweight curl cream will help define the strands you want to curl, but won’t weigh your hair down too much.

Choppy Textured Bob with Bold Bangs
Instagram: nataliarok

#36: A Choppy Bob with Bangs That Have Some Attitude

I absolutely love this cut! There is so much personality in it, the bangs are really bold, and the choppy texture contributes an intentional messiness to the fine hair, which is so contemporary. Being cut just above the shoulders gives it a fun bouncy effect and the layers contribute to texture and movement so well.I can just see this working great on heart shaped and oval face shapes. A fine hair type like this that has layering is going to require some product to hold the texture throughout the day, so a light styling cream or mousse applied to the hair when it is damp will help a ton.

Modern Textured Short Bob with Side-Swept Bangs
Instagram: hairbyyen

#37: A Short Bob with Side-Swept Bangs and Good Movement

This haircut truly shows off how nice jawline-length hair with fine texture is. The length is just enough to create movement and not enough for it to just hang. The side swept bangs also frame the face nicely and aren’t too formal. The slight layering also helps to soften the bounce and give fine hair more umph. There is also a youthful and modern vibe to it in a not overly done way. There is daily styling needed to maintain the tousled texture but it’s pretty close to a wash and go.

Dynamic Stacked Pixie with Luminous Highlights
Instagram: salondm3

#38: A Stacked Pixie with Bright Highlights

Great job on the stacking at the crown! It gives height to the fine hairs that go flattest, and the glowing highlights capture light and add fullness and dimension to the look. The neck taper is nice and clean, and the overall shape is very flattering. The blonde shades are warm, and bright, and give the cut a lot of nice energy. To keep that lift at the crown, just a bit of mousse at the roots when blow drying will do the trick. For styles like this, you’ll want to hit the salon every four to five weeks!

Textured Stacked Bob with Subtle Layers
Instagram: emily_yvonne_

#39: A Stacked Bob with Texture and an Angled Shape

At first glance, this cut may seem simple, but it actually entails a lot of specific techniques. The stacking and layered volume is provided by a combination of angled shapes around the face which is especially flattering for oval and heart shaped faces. The subtly tussled finish is a modern touch and stops it looking too polished. In this example, fine hair is made to look much thicker than it actually is which is, to be honest, the point of a good haircut. The shape requires maintenance every 5-6 weeks but daily styling is also kept to a minimum.

Textured Short Shag with Soft Layers
Instagram: redlocks_hair

#40: A Short Shag with Blonde and Darker Roots

I am currently obsessed with shags, especially for finer hair. All the layering and texturizing give so much volume to work with. This one has a little more length on top and is tapered in the back and sides. The blonde with dark root shadow creates depth around the hair scalp area that looks the finest. The soft gentle face framing layers are very pretty. It can take some styling work to achieve the volume at its best and root volumizing powders can be a real save on days where things are looking a bit too flat.

#41: A Curly Crop with a Soft Fringe

The soft curls bring the hair to life! The face- framing bangs are really cute and in a great way. If you have some natural curls or waves, it will be simple to manage. If you don’t, then no worries! Fine hair actually tends to holds a curl really well at this length. It sounds like you’ll want a curl defining cream to avoid frizz, but this will be so cute! Overall, this is a great style that will work wonders on fine hair.

#42: A Tapered Cut with Warm Color and Subtle Dimension

This look is more discreet, not overly showy or attention grabbing, but sometimes that is just what you need. The tapered cut creates a rounded silhouette that is flattering to most face shapes, while the warm toned color is subtle and directional. Thin hair is less work in the morning since this cut offers just the right amount soft volume. My only concern is that the shape can get a little flat in the afternoon if you don’t style it, so I’d recommend adding volumizing mousse to your getting ready routine.

Modern Blunt Bob with Soft Face-Framing Layers
Instagram: ashleyb.hair

#43: A Blunt Bob with Soft Layers Through the Front

I like how the bob’s sharp, precise line contrasts with the softer, layered, face-framing pieces. It’s nice having the structure associated with a bob, accompanied by the softness that layered face-framing pieces provide, resulting in a more polished look. The length finishes just above the shoulders for a really nice look. The finish is clean but not too stiff, and the layers that hit the cheekbones are great. The face-framing layers will need to be tended to every now and then, as layered bangs often do. You will probably lose that layered effect. But that blunt cut will mean that, no matter how much you trim those layers, the overall shape stays nice and even.

#44: An Inverted Bob with Soft Layers

This particular inverted bob is ideal for fine hair, as both structural shape and length create lift at the roots, and the soft layers that move without causing too much thinning. It also provides beautiful face framing, with the length sitting just above the shoulders, and highlights subtle enough to create texture and not stripey. When it comes to daily styling, it is actually quite an easy cut, so nothing too tricky, just try to avoid long split end hair as fine hair will show them more readily. it’s not uncommon for the cut to look a bit scraggly if the ends are overgrown. The most important thing with this cut is regular end trimming.

Playful Short Cut with Vibrant Streaks
Instagram: _styledbymia

#45: A Short Cut with Purple Streaks and Some Fun

I completely understand if this isn’t for you. The detail on the back gives it an edge with textured layers on the front and creates a good shape and the purple bits bring so much more fun to it. Fashion colours work so much better on fine hair as it is lighter and more porous. The layers will add to the thickness as well as the shape being more suited for rounder and oval face shapes. If you are planning to get a colour like this, be aware that it will fade and shift a lot as fashion colours do, so invest in a colour depositing conditioner to stretch your salon visits.

#46: A Bold Red Cut with Big Layers

I personally love the vivid deep red shade, for an example, I think a fine hair of that strong color really adds an incredible amount of visual weight and thickness to the hair. I think the bold layers are fabulous because they really do add to the movement and volume, and the length just above the shoulders allows the hair to bounce. I love the boldness of this style, but the upkeep is really crazy because red is the fastest fading color. That means the layers also need to be shaped more often to keep the look kept. All together this is a look for someone who really doesn’t mind clocking a lot of time in the chair.

#47: A Layered Shag with Waves and Highlights

A great reason why I keep coming back to shags for fine hair is the layers. Textured movement in fine hair makes such a difference. It makes hair look fuller and more dynamic. The soft waves make the hair look more voluminous and the highlights provide more dimension. I also appreciate that this looks good on a lot of different face shapes because that’s not always the case. I do want to point out though that shags are a haircut that require regular upkeep. The whole point of the cut is the layers and after some time those layers will start to grow out and lose their shape, which can look quite messy. So just make sure you don’t neglect your maintenance trims.

#48: A Short Curly Bob

When haircuts are done correctly, curly fine hair can be a really pretty combination, as shown in this short bob with soft curls. Because fine hair lacks the volume, the cut short and the curls add a bounce and liveliness. The highlights add a nice dimension to the curls, and they keep things from looking uniform which is nice. Now, if your hair doesn’t curl on it’s own, it will need to be done with a small barrel iron, but if you have even the slightest wave, this cut will really bring it out. This is definitely not the style for you if you like sleek and straight looks.

#49: A Textured Cut with Wispy Bangs

Wisp bangs suit fine hair as they are not heavy and won’t cover your whole face like strong bangs can do. This style offers some texture which gives fine hair a bit more liveliness and the length will suit a multitude of face shapes. The soft layers help with the texture without making it look too thin and sparse. The style is not fussy and it is super easy for a day to day look. The wispy ends created by fine hair will look messy so you will need to stay on top of your trims.

#50: A Coral Choppy Bob

Just look at the coral color and how it pops! This hair cut is super playful and the color adds dimension and depth to the hair. With the waves and uneven layers, the choppy texture will add fullness to fine hair. For those with rounder faces, longer hair will be more flattering. The energy with this cut and color combo is amazing and the hair will be super low maintenance. The color will fade, and shift and you will want to use color safe shampoo. Compared to natural colors, this will definitely need some more touch ups. For volume, a lightweight mousse will work wonders!

#51: A Sleek Pixie with Clean Lines

This pixie cut is very clean and modern! The length above the ears is flattering on everyone! The layered texture is phenomenal! It has that lightness to the hair that finer hair reacts to. Also, a pixie is very well cut and low maintenance. You want to keep your trims up for that precision. About every four weeks is perfect. Once a cut starts to grow out that clean look will quickly turn from intentional to shaggy.
